    Yes, for a basic - surf a bit of web, type a couple of emails, write a couple of letters - a core2duo with XP and a 2Gb will be fine, and cost you less than £100 for the tower.

    Go to ebay and search for core2duo desktop and you'll find plenty of options. Make sure you choose a top rated seller with shimmeringly good feedback.

    It's full of firms reselling perfectly good machines after companies upgrade.

    Chances are they'll have a shedload of mice and keyboards and screens they'll be happy to offload for a small price too.

    XP is absolutely fine for a basic machine. If you're uncomfortable about not getting security updates after 2014 you can always install Ubuntu instead, it's not too difficult.
