BTEC Level 2 Diploma grading

Could anyone tell me. If you are on a BTEC level 2 Diploma how do they work out whether you have a pass, merit or distinction? Do they add up all the marks and if you have over a certain amount they award the grade or do you have to get a merit in all of your assignments in order to receive a merit grade?

My daughter is on a BTEC Level 2 animal care course and is trying to get a merit. She thinks she might have not achieved a merit on one of the assignments at the start of the course but has in all the others. Will this mean she hasn't got a merit grade?

If your daughter's course is like mine, they may have given her a book with grading information (am taking a btec level 2 health and social care course) my tutor's have been writing how much I have been getting and adding them up per unit, regarding your daughter's assignment, has she been given the opportunity to resubmit her work?

  • Thanks for the link about the Btech students..

No matter if she didnot come in the merit list. Marks are not the judgement of any student only experience matters..

My daughter hasn't been given anything like that. She also hasn't been given an opportunity to resubmit her work. They have to do it by the deadline and if it's not in by then it's tough. She did do the merit task but she was ill that week so it wasn't up to her normal standard. Seems they don't make allowances for that at her college (Great Yarmouth).

o.O that is not fair on your poor daughter on a number of levels! :/ How old is your daughter? I only ask as alot of colleges, such as mine, if you are under eighteen (or eighteen) parent's can have "parent's evenings" and have a word with their child's main tutor. I can try photograph the grading system on mine if you like? I think it covers them all?

For the L2 Diploma I am presuming she has completed 7 units.
It is the final unit grade not the individual assignment grade that is important.
E.g a unit might have 3 Merit tasks, she would have to complete all the passes and all the merits for the unit in order to achieve the merit.

Depending on the unit she will get either 5 or 10 points, these points are then multiplied by 5 for a Pass, 6 for a Merit or 7 for a Distinction.

To achieve Merit overall she will need a total of 340 points.

Below are the core units that she has to at least pass.
    Unit 1 = 10 points
    Unit 2 = 5 points
    Unit 3 = 5 points
    Unit 4 = 10 points

She should then have completed another 3 units, these will all be worth 10 points.

I can calculate it if you get stuck, just drop me a PM.
