Ordered sky + box which is getting fitted on sunday, tried to get one of the free boxes that were getting handed out to returning customers but as a new customer they were having none of it but got them down to £99 with free installation and half -price subscription for a few months - anyway when i enquired the sales person said it would be the newest /best type of sky + box ( i belive they sell re-furbs / older boxes etc) so what is the newest/best type, I belive they come with different amounts of memory? just wanted to know what type of box i should be lookign for when the sky man comes round

I believe that all the boxes fitted now, whether refurb or brand new offer the same storage, 160g hard drive for up to 40 hours of your own programmes and the other half taken by Sky for Anytime programming which they download overnight.
I think I am right in saying that all new installations are given brand new boxes, the refurbs being kept for fault replacement etc.
My personal view is that the Pace boxes are the best, they are up to version 3 now.
Hope this helps.0 -
You may find the Digital Spy forum interesting. Lots of information on Sky+ there.

Sam has a list of Sky+ Digiboxes: http://sam-radford.me.uk/skyplus.htm
Pace BskyB3100 is said to be the most reliable, although it sometimes has problems with remote extender "magic eyes".0 -
Pace do seem to be the most reliable of the PVR3 boxes followed by Thomson and then Amstrad. Usually new receivers come in a white box with sky on it, reburbs come in plain brown boxes.. You should be able to see what make the receiver is by looking underneath or at the rear of the receiver.. I think the biggest issue with the Thomson and the Amstrad is the noise the hard drive makes but not a problem if you are putting it in a TV cabinet. I don't think all are the same though as there are a lot of people happy with their Amstrads and Thomsons and say they make no noise at all.
You can also tell what the make is of the PVR3 receiver as soon as it's taken out of the box. The pace has vents on the top of the receiver on the sides with a strip down the middle with no vents.. The Thomson has no vents on the top of the receiver and the Amstrad has vents all over the top of the receiver.
I hope you can make sense of that and it is of some use to you..
Make the nice Sky man a cup of tea and ask him nice if he's got one of those nice Pace's on his van..:)sometimes you're the pigeon, sometimes you're the statue!0
