Hi guys I am slowly running out of memory on my pc.

How easy is it to install myself?

How do I know what type of memory I need?

Thanks in advance

If you go to Crucial.com (I think), there's a piece of software that will tell you what you currently have and what the motherboard will support. It will try to sell you some, but ignore it, you will be able to get cheaper (I bought mine off eBay).

As for fitting, even I could do it (which must make it easy!!).
I suggest you earth yourself first just in case by leaving it all plugged in but switched off at the wall-socket and just touching the metal casing a few times.
Take the side of the computer, and you'll be able to see what memory is already there.
The memory will either unclip and lift out, or just lift straight out. then it's simply a case of plugging your new stuff in exactly the same way and booting up.

To check it's being seen, right-click on My Computer and hit properties.

I thought this myself as I am a complete novice. I went onto a website called crucial.com which talks you through which one you need. You need the specifications for your PC (i.e. type and model etc). and then it tells you what you need.

When I took the top of my PC there were only two slots so I knew which ones to put it in. It was really easy and I can tell you, I need easy.

I didn't buy mine off crucial as I needed it straight away so I got it from PC World for £20 but it would be cheaper to get it from crucial.

I don't think you even need to know the make and model of your PC, it's quicker if you do but if you don't there is a utility on the crucial site you can download and run that will tell you what you need. Crucial's prices aren't too bad either although it's always worth shopping around.
It's my problem, it's my problem

Thanks for all your advice as you can probably tell I am also a complete novice but will give anything a go.

I will let you know how I get on.

By the way do you have to remove your old memory and replace with new or will your new memory fit side to side?

If I have to remove the old memory does this mean i have to back everything up?
  • Memory and disk space are completely different things now, and i think you are slightly confused.

    1) When you say your are fast running out of memory do you mean that you have less and less room to store your files on, i ask this because you ask if you have to back everything up.

    2) Alternatively you could mean that you are running low on memory ie you are using resource hungry programs and your computer is running very slowly.

If you are talking about scenario one then it is a new hard disk you need if it is scenario two then you need more RAM. Just want to make sure cause it sounds like you'll be buying the wrong thing.
