Virus help - police type one?

i have a virus on my Pc and as soon as it loads up from powering on, this pop up take over the whole screen and is designed to look like a police warning, ive tried opening my PC in safe mode (pressing F8 continually), and was then hoping to open malware-bytes and do a scan, which usually helps, but it wont even let me do that. Even opening it in safe mode, befroe you get a chance to open your virus checker/trojan finder it goes into 'shutting down' mode without even touchnig anything

Any ideas please?

I'm not sure if it's the same police warning, but I managed to get rid of a couple of very similar sounding virus by doing the following (on windows 7):

    - Boot PC (wait for pc screen to show up)
    - Cltr+Alt+Delete
    - Select shutdown
    - You then get the 'Windows is waiting forthe following programs to close before shutting down' (I can't remember the exact terminology)
    - Select cancel on that popup

I found that this closed down the dodgy police program, but didn't shut down the computer, so I had a chance to open my various anti-virus/malware tools and run the scans to clear it up.

I also had success once with very quickly firing up Ccleaner on bootup and un-ticking a decidedly iffy looking program listed under the start up applications, then rebooting. This is of course only possible if you already have Ccleaner installed and can get it opened quickly enough!

DH had to do this for a friend last night - it's nasty and tricking the unwary into paying money - which doesn't solve the problem, of course!

    Restart computer

Hit F8 on startup then select safe mode with command prompt

Once in command prompt type rstrui.exe

Follow system restore procedure and restore pc to an earlier time.

Thats how ive fixed a few laptops with this police virus on in the past few weeks.

Do you have a backup of your PC? If yes then you should format the PC and install a new window or just format the C drive and install the new window software.

I removed this from a friends PC using an anti-virus boot CD. You'll need to download it on another machine and burnt it to disc.
The files can be found here:-

You'll also need some sort of image burning software (imgburn is a good free one). I downloaded the ISO and burnt it as an image.

Once that's on disc, boot from it, let it update (if necessary) and do a full scan.

  • I had this once and found I could Alt-Tab away from it.
I think PledgeX's suggestion is sound - which works for you?

Try starting in safe mode with command prompt. At the command prompt type Explorer.exe and then navigate to the program files folder and start mbam.exe

Cheers, tried this but when I click 'shutdown' it just shuts down as normal, without the 'waiting for program to respond' type message, and unfortunately don't have ccleaner installed, will try next suggestion

Thanks for the ideas tho so far

Open in Safe Mode, download Malwarebytes, run it and it will find the culprit and remove it.

Had the same problem myself a few months back and cured it that way.
