My current pc has xp home installed along with Zonealarm, AVG, Adaware, Spybot, Spyguard and Spyblaster which works in perfect harmony :-)
If i bought a computer with vista basic installed would the above anti-virus etc software work or will there be some conflict?

The Vista firewall is better than the XP one but is still not great. Zone Labs are working on a Vista compatible version of ZoneAlarm which should be out soon. I shall install that when it is released.
Other than that I run AVG, Spybot and AdAware without any problems. I also run Microsoft Defender anti-spyware.It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
