Hi

Just wanting some advice. My brother in law has just bought a new house with the intention of us renting it. I currently get gas and electric through British gas on prepayment metres. I am not sure if the new house has credit metres or prepayment. The problem is my husband and I have poor credit rating we are in process of correcting it but would a new supplier credit check us for a new account and what is likely hood of moving from prepayment to credit metres without putting deposit down? I will check when see brother in law but just worried we may get stuck

Hope this all made sense

Woody xx

As far as I'm aware there is no credit check with moving suppliers. If the house currently has a prepayment meter then a supplier is unlikely to make you change it to be prepayment meter. However if the property currently has a prepayment meter then you may not be allowed to move to a credit meter, or will have to pay for a meter change and deposit (with Scottish Power this is roughly £50 meter change and £100 deposit but you would have to check with the individual supplier for other rates).

If you are moving house then BG have to close your account and cannot make open a new account with them in the new property. However if you have any debt with them you will have to make an arrangement to pay this.

Scenario 1 - the property currently has credit meters fitted
Most suppliers will credit check you. If they don't, or the credit check is not of a high enough rating, they may ask you to pay a 12 month security deposit and/or pay monthly by DD.
It would not be usual for the supplier to insist PPMs were installed (unless perhaps you are an undischarged bankrupt, etc)

Scenario 2 - the property has PPMs fitted.
You will first have to become a PPM customer. This article explains how the major suppliers will treat a request for them to be changed to a credit meter.
