Debt over 9 years old reappearing on credit file

Hi everyone,

I had a Barclaycard which defaulted in 2004. By 2011, the Barclaycard had been removed from my credit file as 6 years had passed. The past 2 years I have religiously checked my credit file and it has been clear.

Today I applied for a mortgage and was rejected due to a credit check. I was extremely surprised as my file has been very good and I have had other successful credit applications in the past two years. So I thought I would check my file and suddenly, as if from nowhere, the Barclaycard has reappeared showing a status of "LATE PAYMENT" for the past 5 years, back until 2008 where the status is "UNKNOWN STATUS".

Has anyone else had a similar experience and can offer any advice as to why it has suddenly reappeared and how I can get it removed?

This couldn't have happened at a worse time unfortunately. Be warned anyone getting into debt: the ghosts have an uncanny way of coming back to haunt you...

Thanks in advance.

Well if you knew about the debt why didn't you pay it?

i would suspect an error on the cras systems that are not recognising that there was a previous default? so that this is appearing when it shouldnt? what cra is this on?
  • Hi nottoolate,

Thanks for your reply. This is on annualcreditreport.co.uk and it is showing at a linked address. I have also just checked with Equifax and it is showing under a linked address there too.

However it does not show on any Experian Reports (one dated 2008 and a fresh one I have received today!) even though the address is reported under linked addresses there!

I am now wondering if it has been on Equifax all along but annualcreditreport.co.uk have only just started using Equifax as well as Experian.

    Thanks

not surprised its equifax. seems to have been quite a few people with strange things on equifax reports lately that shouldnt be there.

you need to complain to equifax.
