  • Hi my granddaughter rents a house that has been leaking water in for 10 weeks and was walking around the living room slopping water everywhere it was that bad, we got the environment people out and they gave them 8 weeks to do the repairs which there was a number example sewerage was coming up into the bath when the water from the shower was running so had to put the plug in till she had finished, still waiting for jobs to be done got the leak stopped and carpet dried also had the plaster taken off 1 wall but now got to wait 2weeks for it to dryso doing nnothing else surely they should be doing the other jobs why they are waiting. The environment say now that the work is started she doesn't need rehoming I always thought they should be on the Tennant side seeing has that's what they are paid for, she is paying rent but living on her mums settee surely this is all wrong when you pay a agency your money to look after you. I must stress this is the 2nd place she has had with the same agent and the first one was damp and mouldy so after her 6 months she moved on but they kept her deposit saying she left before her contract was up which was a lie, but she is in a worse one now and her contract isn't up till the end of October surely there should be some way out of these situations.

  • I think students sometimes get a worse deal than general renters, partly because they are inexperienced, and partly because SOME landlords will take advantage. Students can also feel hurried into accepting a house because they think the stock of housing will run out. There is a website which enables students to check reviews of houses (and halls) before they sign. It's called Move'm (movem.co.uk).
The reviews are all from previous student tenants. Hopefully sites like this will help to improve the rental market in the same way that TripAdvisor has helped us choose hotels.
