    Hi Martin,

As you said people can disagree but you also said that you did not see the post in question. It was not a disagreement, it was one person deliberately starting a new thread to attack another user.

When I said can't posts be removed I don't mean every little disagreement, people do have the right to voice their opinons after all. Can't something be done along the lines of volunteers to remove deliberately inflammatory posts before they get out of hand as they have this weekend please?

If this isn't workable could we not think of something that is?

Claire. You see this one as clear cut. I haven't seen it but it probably was and I'm sure abuse will remove it. Now what about what that has subtle jibes relating to another thread. Should that be removed? What about one where the insults are vague, or theoretical as an example of an arbitrary discussion. Should that be removed?

Now imagine someone comes on here writes a note about "how bankruptcy is too easy" and someone writes a response saying "how dare you come on here" and it gets a bit more abusive. It's then removed.

Do you know what happens? We get complaints a. about the original thread b. about the board guide being a 'fascist' for censoring c. about the original thread being out of order d. about the respondents being rude and problematic.

I've had this site for 4 years, with 4 million posts on it. We've had more scenarios than you can imagine. We've had every complaint possible. It's not easy to deal with and those who are involved in the situation are not the best people to deal with it.

I know you think its easy. But I've been doing this a long time, followed all best practice guides, legal guides, counselling guides and more. I care deeply about what happens. All your solutions may solve what you perceive to be the main problems but they then raise a whole other group, other people getting upset about ebing "picked on" or "censored" or "stifling debate".

So I've spent hundreds of hours devising a strategy. Taking legal counsel. Readint abus ecomplaints - the thousands that come in a day and I do the best I can.

Saying "it ain't good enough" or "lets think of something else" is easy. Sadly I'm the one who carries the can of keeping this site running and all the law suits. I try and do it for the best reasons, I ask you trust me to do it well. If you can't then perhaps this isn't the site (i'm not asking anyone to leave, just to realise that knee jerk suggestions don't necessarily work).

You ask me to 'give it to someone to do'. What if they do it wrong. They're on holiday - we give it to another, 2 others, 10 others. What if they abuse someone, get annoyed, start changing the posts that have been written. Then what?

It's 11.30pm I've a lot of work to do tonight... and I'm leaving this here. I wish you all good night and I do appreciate you're well meaning, but the solutions you pose aren't as easy as you think.

    Good night folks

    Martin :)

  • My personal opinion is people should take responsability for their own posts. Unfortuantly you will always get people who take things too far, in real life, on the street, over the phone or indead via the 'net.
However as in 'real life' if they are ignored they will often get borred and g eslsewhere

Ignore the trolls and they soon go away, unfortuantly life is full of 'odd bods' who like to stir up trouble and make others feel down whilst trying to boost their own self esteme.. Sad but true

    We are all adults here.

Rise above the insults and ignore them.

Report what you may think is abuse and let them decide.

Responding to an insult wastes time and energy and long unneccessary threads..

Dont fuel the fire. Walk away as you should do in a face to face situation.

This board is very helpfull, do not let the minority spoil it.

If Martin had not started MSE then where would we have all turned to for the help that can be obtained on this forum.

    Dont spoil it..

By the way... forgot to say... most of the posters on here are WONDERFUL! And the concern above people are showing for others they've never met is the real indication of the strength of this site, and that most people are truly decent.

I wish I did - have a big bank charges press release and announcement going out tomorrow (can't tell you yet) and trying to get it exactly right! Not easy... using all my few brain cells.

    Martin :)

That's the key I think. People don't want to cause problems or give you and the abuse team a hard time. We are just aware of the real suffering happening to real people. I think we just want people to get advice and help without the interference of the people who feel it's ok to berate and abuse others through the anonymity of the web.

But, as I have said, I do understand your legal issues.

good luck with that, I'm recording a soundtrack for an animation tomorrow, you wouldn't think it but cartoons are the absolute hardest thing for a muso. Give me a rock band any day, but it's all food on the table I guess
