Combi boiler problems

Hi there
I have an Alpha 240 combi boiler. Heating works fine. Hot water has worked on and off all day today but now seems to have stopped all together. The pressure seems ok. It doesn't fire up when the hot water tap is on.
I know I'm going to have to get an engineer in, but I think I've seen too many episodes of House of Horrors and feel that I'm going to get told I need a new boiler when all I really need is a new screw or something!! I thought I'd see if anyone knew if this was a common problem or was easily sorted.
Any help/thoughts greatly appreciated!

British gas will repair for a fixed quote, might not be the cheapest option but, it's unlikely you'll be ripped off !0

Can't you ask around friends, neighbours, work collegues etc to see if they can recommend a trustworthy corgi reg guy?
A recommendation is always better than just chancing to luck. If you can't find someone by recommendation, then B Gas as suggested by professional landlord above is a sound one.The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Hi
Don't know whether this will help but we had a similar problem with our combi boiler. The heating worked fine but it didn't fire up when we turned the hot tap on = no hot water. We had a bit of a nightmare getting heating engineers to want to fix it, and when they did turn up they scratched their heads and said it was the computer and was going to cost a fortune. One even said we needed a new boiler!!!! As it turned out it was simply a washer that had blocked the flow, so when you turned on the hot water tap the pressure didn't change and consequently the boiler didn't fire up. Wasn't anything to do with the computer. Cost about £90 all in all. Far better than a new boiler.
Anyway I hope that is of some use.0 -
Thanks everyone. Have got a few recommendations but getting hold of them is a nightmare! Apparently I probably need a new diverter valve or a part in it so at least if they say I need a new boiler I can tell them where to go.0
