Plasterboard vs. wet plaster

Hi - I've just taken all the plaster off the walls of a bedroom, down to the brick/other wall materials. I'm now unsure as to whether I should put up plasterboard myself, and then have it skimmed - or get a plasterer in to properly render the walls first (and then skim as well).

I don't know for sure if I've ever encountered a plasterboard wall, so I can't tell if they're what I want. Do they sound hollow and weak? Are they weak? I just have the impression that the feel of the wall is cheaper and more fragile with plasterboard, but is this so?

I'd be fixing them with adhesive, most likely, by the way.

Thanks,

They aren't weak, but there again, in your case they aren't structural. Each situation is different, for example, you could put a layer of insulation behind the plaster board if you required it, or soundproofing. Do you need to run cables for sockets, switches etc.

I find that most clients prefer a plasterboard wall because they find it easier to drive in nails to hang pictures. Sometimes, it just comes down to that!

If you have been in modern house you will have encountered plasterboard walls, most likely.

Why did you take the plaster off ? If it was damp or cracking look at the way to fix that problem first . Dot & Dab plasterboard is cheaper and easier (dry wall adhesive)Bonding/browning and a skim(multifinish) is better traditional and longer lasting and whay youve taken off . I would replace with that TBH find a decent plasterer

I've only ever lived in houses from the 30's or older, and others (e.g. Georgian terrace) hadn't been renovated recently.

I've routed cables under floorboards so I won't need to chase anything up the walls.

I took the plaster off because it was seriously damaged in a lot of places - and blown in *some* (mostly where it had been improperly applied straight onto timber) and since there was only about 20% difference between quotes to skim and to completely replaster, I thought I might as well take this opportunity to get it all sorted.

We had our external walls plasterboarded but got thermoboard for extra insulation, it's been really good. You can tell the difference in winter as it holds the heat in so well.
