There are 2 elements to JSA, Income Based (IB) and Contribution based (C). Contribution based is calculated on your last 2 full tax years, e.g if you were to claim now your claim would be 'rated' on years April2004 to April 2005 and April 2005 to April 2006. It would depend on how much you worked and paid contributions on your earnings whilst in work also if you received any contribution benefits during this time also.
Can quote you specifics should you want to know then you can compare them to figures in your P60, email me if you wish me to do this.
I know this as, dare i say it, i work for the Department.
Income based is 'means tested' so they look at your incoming money, e.g Mortgage protection policy payouts etc and part time earnings if any, child benefit and tax credits are ignored as they are for the children If no other income the rate for couple is £92.80 assuming both over 18.
Money for the children comes in form of tax credits, they need to do a new assesment now there is no one in your family working and thus increase the payout in respect of your 2 children. Let Housing benefit, council tax benefit know also so any rebate is applied.

    Hope this helps.

    Kind Regards

Income based JSA also depends on your capital, if you have over £16000 in savings you will not receive any. Between £6000 and £16000 it is paid at reduced rates.
