Stopping a 1 yr old dog weeing in the house

Hi,

I'm just after any tips or advice. We have got a 1 year old jack russel/shih tzu cross who we have had since a puppy and she has started weeing in the house all the time again. She is constantly out in the garden and the door is always open for her but she will go out for a while then come back in and wee.
She is not left alone for long in the day as I work from home and it is normally just when I am on the school run. She also has two walks a day so is not under exercised.
My wife is at her wits end and no longer wants anything to do with the dog and wants to get rid of her. To me that isn't an option and it is causing huge problems.

Any help or advice is appreciated.

Do you not have a "go" word? I tell my dog to "wee" and he goes on command, he's only 14 weeks old but I intend to keep this up for ever really, helps if you're in a rush or need them to go just before bed etc. Saying that he's fully house trained now.

Do you still priase her when she goes in the correct place? If not go back to basics and praise her each time she does the wee outside. Don't scald her if you find wee in the house after she's done it as she won't know what she's being told off for. Only tell her "no" if you catch her in the act.

Is she doing it in the same place all the time? If so the smell might still be there and you may need to use a different cleaner.

When did she start doing this? Has she been spooked in the garden so now won't do it outside? Does she still wee on walks? Does she poop in the house or just wee?

Thanks for the reply. I havent tried a go word but was just reading some articles and they said about it. She always wees and poos on her walks and has no problem doing it.
She doesn't go in the same place and even went on the settee the other day literally seconds after she had been out. She's fine going into the garden and spends ages out there. Its as if she just forgets to go outside and is then caught short inside.

I think you just need to go back to basics. Watch her as much as you can when she's outside and when she goes use the "word" as she's going such as good wee or good toilet and then reward her with a treat when she's done. It won't take long to cotton on that she gets rewarded when she does it outside.

If she's still having problems after a week or 2 then you may need to go to the vet as she may have a bladder problem.

Another thing you can try is to make sure you're cleaning up accidents with biological washing powder. When the dog does have an accident, take her to it, point at it and say "no wee". Then soak a paper towel with the wee, take it outside to where you want her to pee, bring her to it, let her sniff it and say "wee" then praise her.

Thanks both. I think you are right about going back to basics. Its toilet bootcamp week in my house this week then.

IS she crated when you go out? or is she allowed to roam? She is letting you know she doent like being left and is trying it on so to speak.

If you dont crate her then I would give it some thought. Like others have said I would start afresh with the toilet training. My pup is 10 months old and he knows his command for the toilet.

codemonkey has it spot on, The only other thing it could be,( if this has only just started) is an infection, might be worth getting her checked out at the Vets just to be on the safe side. x

She is kept in a crate in our utility room, but the crate door is left open. The utility door is not. I left her to roam once and she weed everywhere. She was neutered about a month ago so I might pop her back to the vets just to get her checked out.

You need to go back to basics with her.

Literally start house training as if she is a puppy you are house training for this first time!

Remember if your dog has regular accident inside the house like that, then they arent 100% house trained.

Start from the beginning and i guarentee she will get it

Also get your dog checked, it may have a UTI or similar, good luck

Putting the soiled kitchen roll outside is a great idea - we did this when out dog was a pup.

But I wouldn't advise taking her back to her accidents - it won't teach her anything other than that you point at her puddles of wee, and as you're likely to do it in a negative voice, might just encourage her to hide where she's doing it! Much better to put your energy into re-training her where you do want her to go.

Like others have said, introduce what ever word you choose to sue when she's weeing, not when you want her to go, and praise her when she does go. Stay with her so you can praise her. :-)
