My friend is currently sailing to the med, for the first time in his boat.

He's picking us up in Pisa, hopefully.

Is there any travel insurance I can get that if his boat sinks or he's physically unable to get to Piza I can cancel my flights?

We're fairly sure he'll get there. He does currently have a minor problem with his masts, they've come loose in Ramsgate. So not a good start...

Speak to PJ Hayman to see if they can offer anything. They are specialists with lots of different policy options. If they cannot tailor any policy to suit your requirements, I am not sure who else to try.

Personally I think you are taking on a known or even a partially accepted risk, so getting an Insurers to agree to share this is going to come at a price.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

    I doubt it.

You could either (i) have a plan B for a holiday in land in that part of the world so that the flights would not be wasted, or (ii) arrange flights nearer the time, once you are fairly sure he is going to make it.

Did you mean that the meeting would be in Pisa? Italy has good and cheap rail connections, and plenty of airports. Last time I checked, Ryanair flights to Bergamo (near Milan) were affordable a few days before the date of travel.

We've booked the flights to Pisa already. Ooops, spellong on previous post.

Rail & Ferry may be the best option, or just hanging around in Pisa. Worse comes to worse I can always get a hotel for the night, grab a car and go for a wander. The flights were about £100 each for ryan air, so it's not a massive risk, just frustrating if we have to have a hotel holiday because I wouldn't go if I wasn't on the boat - it's mostly because we're visiting my friend and 2ndly because we get free (or almost free) accommodation. I'm also looking forward to doing some sea fishing & BBQ's on the boat.

Still, he's got the bay of Biscay to traverse yet. If he makes it through that, it's fairly plain sailing from what I understand.
