Automatic renewal for house insurance?

Our house insurance is due for renewal on June 15.
We finally got documents in from our current insurer on Friday. The quote is much higher than I an find with other companies so was planning on changing.
However, the policy says our policy has automatically renewed...is this right or can we still change to another company? Surely we can't be forced to stay with the same company? They're closed now so can't phone till morning. I was planning on getting cash back too on my new policy!

It's June 10th today, so it hasn't renewed yet.
Ring them tomorrow and make sure you LAPSE it (that means carry on with the existing one but don't renew).
If you say cancel there is a chance you might be misunderstood and they cancel your current policy.
Make sure you get some kind of confirmation otherwise it's all too easy for them to deny you phoned.
At the very least you need a full name (John or fred is no good), time and date (so you could ask for recordings to be checked if there is a dispute).
Ideally you want to get confirmation in writing or email.
Best approach can often be to be charming (best way to get people to help you) and ask them if they would mind putting it in email.
Might sound paranoid but some insurers and gym companies seem to manage to lose a lot of cancellation/lapses.0 -

Wish I knew that last month!
