Hmmmm when I used to work at comet we would take customers details if:

    * They purchased a warrenty - for obvious reasons
    * If the item required a tv lisence to work - The government then runs a check on everyone who has purchased such an item to see if they do actually have a lisence.
    * If the item was above £100 - This was to help the customers out. If they lost their receipt then it was an easy way of finding the sale by the customers name. If the customer refused then we would skip through this as it was an advisory thing, but we didnt have to take details on this occasion. Did on the others though.

Ive known of companies taking details of people purchasing special offers so that they have a record, but never heard of them saying they MUST take details.

Personally I think they are talking rubish.

I use the local police station's postcode (I know the full address, if they ask) - they never realise.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
