Car purchased with Credit Card

Hi, can anyone give me any advice on the following matter?
We purchased a mini in February this year and paid £400 towards it from my lloyds credit card. Around 4/5 weeks ago the gearbox went on it. After getting very high priced quotes we were really struggling with getting it sorted, but we're then told that any purchase over £100 on a credit card would be insured so we assumed we had a case. Since getting in touch with both the garage that sold us the car, and lloyds bank we have had little or no help or information as in regards to where we stand. Today lloyds told us that nothing can be done as its a wear & tear fault, and since the garage only gave 1 months warranty with the car nothing will, or can be done.
No description regarding any warranty was on the one and only receipt we got with the vehicle.
We are really stuck and really don't know which way to turn.
Thanks in advance for any response.

I assume it was 2nd hand? What year, price, mileage etc?You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0

It's a 2001 reg, 154,000 mileage and we paid 1300 plus a Nissan almera px0

I think you might be hard pushed. I'm far from a pro with cars but I think 150k+ miles would probably be seen as fair wear n tear. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0

It has above average mileage (if you go with the 10000 miles a year figure often suggested) and it is a 12 year old vehicle, they do wear out. I don't think your case is particularly strong to be frank0

I am afraid with a 2001 car, with no warranty you are going to find it impossible to get any money back. You purchased it some time ago.
I'd strongly advise anyone buying a second hand car to have it assessed by a mechanic (who could tell you if parts are looking worn but even so, might not be able to predict the gearbox will stop working some months later, but he could give u at the very least an idea of the condition of the car, if its had an unclaimed accident etc if its done more mileage than the clock says etc) or pay for an AA/RAC inspection. I got burned myself very badly some years ago (for a higher priced car) and I learned my lesson.0 -
I'm sure you have some more rights - if bought from a garage. And its only been 4 months...0

Your referring to section 75 protection, which makes the credit card company equally liable for any breaches of contract.
This is NOT an insurance policy. It means if for example you bought a brand new car and the next day the engine seized, if the seller refused to remedy it, you can pursue the CC company. Because sales of goods act makes certain terms implied in consumer contracts, some around quality and fitness. However, you've bought effectively a banger and at the age and mileague said pretty much anything could go wrong and its highly likely because of wear and tear over its lifetime rather than because its faulty.0 -

It hasn't been subject to 4 months use though, it's been subject to 12 years use.0 -
If you're not prepared for big bills, you shouldn't really own a 150,000 mile car. Anything can, and does, go wrong.0

Whats the lowest quote out of curiosity, £700ish? Maybe see if you can get a reconditioned unit? Thinking you could drive the cost down to about £500 ish0
