anyone ever get a negative pregnancy test, when they were in fact pregnant??

Just wondering if anyone had a negative pregnancy test and then still turned out to be pregnant??

I'm very late (approx 2 weeks) but a pregnancy test last week was negative. After reading stuff on the internet it appears fairly common for some women to not get a positive until a bit later on in pregnancy, but I cant help thinking I'm just clutching at straws.

So have you or someone you know ever had this happen to you?

  • I think that false negatives do happen but false positives never. I can't back that up at all though, sorry!

Your cycle can be delayed if you are ill/ stressed/ travel in the first half, before you ovulate, though, which could mean that you don't ovulate at all or until later than you otherwise would have. Could this be the case for you?

EDIT: Sorry, that sounds awfully garbled reading it back!
If you have stress, illness or something major like a long journey during the first phase of your cycle ovulation can be delayed or averted. This would mean that your period comes later or doesn't appear that cycle.

  • I knew someone who got negative urine tests for weeks and weeks before a blood test at the docs confirmed a pregnancy. Really not sure why, but she had a healthy baby 6 months later!

However, I've not heard of anyone else being the same. Is there any other reason your period could be late? Are your cycles normally spot on?

Lou - Am I right in thinking that you didn't track ov this month? Could be the reason. Negative tests usually mean just that and I think the stories of women getting them later on in pregnancy is quite rare to be honest. Of course, you hear about it on the net but that's only because it's unusual and people are more inclined to write about strange things!

A doctor *should* be able to do a blood test for you to confirm it either way if nothing happens in the next week.

The pregnancy hormone HCG doubles every 48 to 72 hours. By the time you get to being two weeks late a pregnancy should show up on a test clearly. If you are still getting negative results then it would suggest that something else is causing the delay in your cycle. Have you been poorly or taking any medication as this can have an effect?

    Thanks for all the replys.

I've not been poorly at all, not even a cold etc, no medication, no stress (or no more then usual lol) literally nothing has happened in last few weeks (or before that to be honest...

The one time in recent years ive been nearly this late, was after being really poorly and taking lots of medication.

I am trying for a baby, but have not tracked my ovulation this month so do not know if/when it occurred.

Its been 5 days since I tested last, I plan to test again tomorrow (as ran out of tests...)

I had a negative test at the dr. I didn't feel well, had done tests at home and negative. Went to the dr who also did a test (as period was late) and it came out negative.

Luckily, my dr was the sort of woman to check everything so she sent me for a scan which was a week later.

I had the scan and by the time I got back to work about 20 mins later, there was a message for me to phone the surgery as my dr wanted to see me.......she told me that I was 7 weeks pregnant.

They do happen, don't know why it happened to me then, as when I was next pregnant, the positive came out quite quickly.

They do happen - and in my case, it was the scan that confirmed it.

    Good luck for your result

After a few weeks (if you can wait that long!) I reckon a doc will be prepared to do a blood test to find out if you're producing any hCG. But bear in mind Loulou, that pregnancies that produce very low levels, i.e. too small to be detected by HPTs are normally not viable :(.

I'd tried a pregnancy test as we were trying and I was late. It was negative, saw my doctor who explained that if I'd ovulated late in my cycle, the hormones wouldn't be high enough for test to work.

She advised re doing the test, but to use my first wee of the day and try not to drink to much before bed / late evening (you want your wee concentrated)

It was positive the next morning. Following my scan it appeared I'd 'got caught' 4 days before I was due.

    Good luck!
