Not sure about your model but had a similar problem with a different one years ago ... it will most likely be damage to the transfer film. Not sure if this is integrated in your cartridge or a separate consumable on your printer but I needed to replace the film cartridge/drum. Sorry if this is a bit vague.

There is probably a piece of dirt, or stuck toner on the drum/image unit which is inside the cartridges on those. If you have another cartridge handy, try that.

Check the toner cart for speckles of toner, if you don't find anything, check the drum for burnt on toner, if you find it, remove if very carefully with a blunt object (wooden lollipop stick etc), as any damage to the drum will show up on every print.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

It does sound like the drum but you should also check inside the printer to see if there are any peices of plastic orange on one side and grey on the other if you find it it will be the same shape and size of the marks on your page. This is the fuser unit falling apart they can be replaced but can cost about the same as buying a new printer depending the model you have.

to test do a print that will cover the marked area in black a black box or somthing, then rub the page where the marks normally are the toner will come off or smudge. another clear indicator the fuser is failing or has a hole in it.

Also, I normally always try to save money, but I got problems (marks as well) with a compatible cartridge for my LJ1100. Next cartridge I get is a genuine HP.

We had this problem with a printer at work that is normally sitting in the cupboard and not used regularly. We brought a new cartridge and it was fine.
