When do you ask people to be your bridesmaids or best man? When you announce your engagement or when you set a date for the wedding?

When ever you like!
However, my bridesmaids knew that they would be my bridesmaids well before DH proposed.
They officially got asked as soon as I was proposed to - same with the best man. They were the first ones we told :rotfl: That was even before DH asked my dad for my hand in marriage!
Not that I'd been planning my big day ever since I saw Sarah Fergusson marry Prince Andrew, or anything.....................

Wow you must be a good planner!! Bridesmaids are no bother really it's just him picking a best man from his mates! Some better mates than others and then some who would be uncomfortable making speeches etc! Men !'The supreme irony of life is that hardly anyone gets out of it alive'0

My engagement and date setting were not far apart, so I asked my BM after we booked the church but only cos I wanted to wait till I saw her face to face - and then was too excited to and did it over the phone! She cried, bless her. DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

As the others have said you can ask them whenever you like but a word of caution, pick them carefully. Don't just pick someone you think you should as although it may not seem like it now you will really need someone to help you on the day and during the run up and if you realised you've picked the wrong person, it's difficult and painful to un-ask them!:jToday is the first day of the rest of your life; live it as if it were your last. :beer:0

well said MonkeyLady. It's very easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment and ask people to be bridesmaids and best men.
If you can wait a while, my best pal was my choice for bridesmaid, but as i got deeper in to the wedding plannng and spending more and more time just with hubby to be she got distant and would only want to come over if 'he' wasn't in. So i sacked her. I told her I couldn't have a bridesmaid that hardly knew my hubby and didn't want to get to know him.Fight for clean hospitals, C-DIFF takes lives

Mr Filigree asked me to marry him in front of friends who were a bit startled! He then asked one of them to be his best man. So, in our case, about five minutes!
I didn't like to rain on his parade but as we're not having a church ceremony I was happy not to bother with attendants, but now he's got a best man I'd better find a bridesmaid
We haven't set a date yet. Heck, I haven't quite got round to divorcing the first one yet...:o0 -
So many pitfalls!!! I have so many family members especially cousins who will expect to be asked! better find my thick skin ready for all the disgruntelled family! And then the added pressure over which of boyfriends mates will be suitable best man! STRESS!!!'The supreme irony of life is that hardly anyone gets out of it alive'0
