Enormous difference in Tax on a reward flight - does anyone know why ?

I've currently got enough AAdvantage points for a 'free' return flight to anywhere in the US from the UK :j.

All I have to pay is the Taxes :eek:.

As AA are part of the OneWorld Alliance, I can use any of their members (if the flight is available) to make my trip and use my AAdvantage points.

I've done a dummy booking for next April. If I use AA metal (except for the MAN-LHR leg) the tax due is £227.90 -- however, if I use BA metal throughout, the tax is an eye watering £463.70.

Could anyone offer me a laymans explanation regarding the huge difference in the amount of tax that is due on the 'free' flight ?

BA includes a fuel surcharge in the fees and charges, AA does not.
