Help - Washing machine keeps refilling

Options
Hi,

I have a Zanussi WJS 1665 W washer-dryer that keeps refilling itself with water.

During a wash cycle everything works as it is supposed to - at the end of the wash cycle, the water drains away as normal, however if I don’t use it for a few days the barrel of the washing machine slowly starts to fill itself with water.

I’m guessing that on the inlet side of things in the washing machine there is a sticking value somewhere?

Can anyone tell me what’s going wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Yep Gerny I can tell you exactly what that is, classic backfilling from the drain, reading this article will shed some light on the problem for you. It's a very common issue. ;)

Thanks for the reply and the link.

I'm not entirely sure that is what is happening, as I don't think that the water in the drum is dirty water.

I've decided to remove the drain pipe that went from the washing machine to the outside drain. If after a couple of days (the time that it normally takes for the drum to fill up) there is no water in the drum, I will know that it was backfilling from the drain.

    I'll report back.
  • Hi,

if you find that it is not backfilling, then you could turn off the water inlet valves, when not in use. Usually a blue and red one, found under the sink, just needs a quarter turn.

You will find you have one of your solenoid valves leaking. Unplug the electric, take the top off, then where your inlet pipes fit to the machine you will see inside the machine some black or brown coils with two wires at the top of each. They fit onto usually a white plastic set of pipes. You need to replace this as one of the valves is not shutting off.

They work like a plunger when you supply power to it it lifts the plunger and water flows and when you stop power it drops and water stops, unless it is stuck as in this case.

Always best to switch the water off and unplug an appliance when not in use.

    Thanks ZizWiz your right.
I removed the washing machine outlet pipe from the main outlet, but left the water inlet pipe plumbed in and switched on and the washing machine is slowly filling up again.

I've contacted a few online places that advertise supplying spares for Zanussi's but haven't even received the decency of a reply!

Can anyone recommend an online store that stocks spares for Zanussi washing machines and actually what to do business?

I'm surprised I have to say, it's not so common for valves to fail in that way these days. TBH they don't fail as often as they used to and the vast majority of failures are usually the solenoid so the valve doesn't open. In fact, I can't recall the last time we came across a valve doing that as they are designed to "fail-safe" and be closed by mains pressure.

Never mind, if you need the valve it is this one which is a little cheaper.
