Hi, I (re) registered after reading this thread yesterday (I was a very occasional poster years ago but can't remember my log in). Really interested to see how people get on. I've been reading a lot about consuming less recently, a bit of a reaction I think to feeling rather threatened by the sheer amount of 'stuff' that seems to surround being a parent-to-be and also to save enough money to be a SAHM for a little while. I shall be following the thread with a lot if interest. Good luckRecovering Shopaholic

Looking forward to reading your journey. It's not for me for reasons such as pigpen states with children their expenses such as new school uniforms will come up, but interested to see how you get on. I also went for a quick look around the 'And then we saved' website and interestingly she lists hair dye as a need. My mum is a hairdresser, does all my familys hair for free and includes the price of hair dye in it, but unless you have a similarly generous friend or relative or are prepared to put up with your natural colour I don't see a way round avoiding buying it.
May a make a suggestion that unless you are already de-cluttered and tidy that you embark on a massive spring clean. I did this at the beginning of last year after being made redundant and the amount of things I found that meant I didn't have to go out buying stuff, my son's lost bus pass was the first thing meaning I didn't have to pay for a replacement, several full packets of sanitary towels I'd shoved in various drawers and a bag of unworn shoes that had been passed on to me several years earlier and I'd shoved in a wardrobe. These will provide me with summer sandalls for several years to come. Have a tidy up, who knows what you'll find.:rotfl:0 -
I get two applications out of a £1 hair colour from the Pound Shop. I have medium length hair.

Can I ask how you get two applications out of a hair dye? Aren't you supposed to throw them out once you have mixed them? Would love to know that trick would savd me money!Second Purse Challenge

Yeah, I'd like an answer to that one too! Do you just mix half of each in the first place?Overpay Mortgage by £9,100 in 2013 - £9,316.16/£9,100

This thread has been going around my head all day! Thank you for the recommendation of the 'And then We Saved' site too.
As mentioned above, I'm 5 and a bit months pregnant but I'd really like to give this a go as much as I can. The motivation to be a SAHM is my incentive. I think I'll spend this evening setting out my 'rules'.
Thanks for starting this!Recovering Shopaholic

I used to use half a bottle of dye each time but now find I have so much grey that I need the whole lot.
I used to keep an old bottle and mix half of the cream and half of the liquid together in this bottle and keep the rest for another time.
I then carefully washed the bottle out for next time.
Simples. Saves a fortune as I do my hair about every 3 weeks.0 -
I did this several years ago when I went back into full time education for a year. I made the decision to only live on what was in my current account at the time of leaving my job and also whatever casual work I could pick. The only clothes I bought in that year was a 5 pack of knickers! Re food shopping the best trick I found was to not use the car. I'm lucky in that I have shops (major supermarkets and local shops) within a 20 minute walk from me, so my restriction was that I could only buy what I could carry home.
I'm now planning on going part time next year, then just doing another two years before retiring, so this post has been great timing for me as I was thinking I must get back to crunching down on spending and go back more to how I was during that non wage earning year. Should give me a nice little pot to take into retirement hopefully until I can claim state pension, so thank you for the prompt!0 -

Hi. I would love to join this challenge. I work on an agency basis and have noticed there is not as much work around as there used to be. I'm a new empty-nester which should make it easier to make the money go round. I need to really tighten my belt and get some savings behind me.
However tight things may be colouring my hair is also a priority for me. I've found Polytint which I buy from Home Bargains for £1.70 to be as good as more expensive ones I've used in the past.
Thanks for starting this thread.Make £10 per day in May challenge: £310/123.920
