I have looked into getting Czech citizenship but you can only get that if your parents were born in the Czech Republic - which does not apply to either of his parents.0

Students who go to boarding school are still considered to be living with their parents/guardians and being in the UK for the sole purpose of education doesn't count towards the period of residency required to be considered as a home student.
It's a shame he didn't start to live with his British grandparents in the holidays when he went to the college.0 -
I'm not sure that would have been enough ... I think he'd need to establish 'ordinary residence' here, and if it appeared that he'd only started living with his British grandparents in the holidays in order to qualify for that, then it wouldn't make a strong case. It's a shame he didn't start to live with his British grandparents in the holidays when he went to the college.
Another question which might reasonably be asked is who's paying for his education? I'm not saying we need an answer, just that it could help establish his residency. Since means tested student finance applications are based on who you're living with, then if it were the UK grandparents paying his fees, AND he was staying with them throughout the holidays ...
OP, the answer may well be to sort out nationality / residence urgently - especially if he doesn't have the right to remain here once his studies finish. Actually, I think that's one of the questions: I know DS2 was surprised that he had to show his passport as part of his application, he thought his driving licence would prove who he was. I said they didn't care who he was so much as that he had the right to be here! Without that, no student finance!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

Universities are under massive pressure from UKBA to make sure that people both have the right to be here and, if that right is contingent upon attending a university, that you are attending a university. They are expected to check that everyone attending the university has the right to be in the country, that people who have student visas are actually attending, and of course that anyone who does work for the university (particularly post-grads) has an appropriate work permit or has the right to work by virtue of their nationality. The London Met experience shows how big are the boots the UKBA are wearing, and several other universities are on "final warnings" which would result in the removal of their ability to bring in overseas students.
So it's not just about finance: the universities themselves will want to make sure that every t is crossed and every i is dotted. If you have a complex or ambiguous immigration status, you need it to be clear and unambiguous by the time you start university.0
