It was beneficial because it could be paid on the last day of the month, used on many savings account and also credited the mortgage on the day of auctioning, saving interest charges.
It could also be amended the day before collection.

I have had this coming out of the same account for over 10 years without any problems at all, I have no objection about it coming from another account if they tell me beforehand so it can be arranged0

Indeed. It seems to me that you are not at fault. Raise a formal complaint in writing and send your letter recorded delivery.
