Quick turnaround card needed (not great credit score)

I am going to the US at the end of the month (not a holiday) but have discovered the US's love for credit cards. The hotel require a card for booking the room.
I need to find a card that I can a) get and b) get quickly (ie walk into a high street store).
Any suggestions?

I have no credit card. My previous I defaulted on a few years back when I was unemployed for a long time. I have been paying min payments for a long time now and paid off the final £100 5 days ago. They refused to reissue.
My credit score is not good. I have a (very) longstanding mobile contract which was renewed about 3 months ago.
I have no CCJs.
I am paying credit agency for defaulted bank loan 2 years ago (again when unemployed - mainly a result of miscommunication with HSBC but that is not important here)
I have money in the bank (both HSBC & Halifax).
Am self employed.
I dont plan on using it much (maybe to help boost score as per guide). Need really only to pay hotel. Will pay off straight away so not fussed about APRs.
Thanks

I've always been able to pay the balance using a debit, and put a small deposit on CC (different now I'm into the Airmiles, but thats a different story).

Give Cap1 a go, as you should have the card within 7 days if approved.

The limit will be small, but just for deposit (ask to put anything extra on debit), it should be ok.

They need Auth code more than anything, for damage.

Been there done that. Applied for Cap1 already but they said they will let me know in a week. Add in the turnaround time for sending a card and it will be too late.

    Pre-Pay Card? will this work?
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

Hotels can't take prepaid cards. You normally need an actual Visa,MC Amex or Discover credit card in the US for hotels and car rentals.

Do you have any family members with a credit card? Maybe they could add you as an additional card holder?

Depending on how quick you need it? Barclaycard are very quick to get the cards out and the pre approval checker will let you know what you are able to apply for

Aqua are pretty quick and are suitable for a patchy credit history, I seem to recall that I got mine in less than a week from applying online.
