I want to open a straight forward savings account that is not linked to a current account which doesn't seem to exist with decent interest rates.

Do you want to be able to get your hands on cash immediately or are you prepared to wait a couple of days while funds go through the clearing process?God save the King!

Assuing you've maxed out your ISA allowance for the year, I think the Coventry First accts the best going. Granted, it's lower than ICICI ,who offer 6.05% at the moment, but it's guaranteed to go up to 6.1% by 10 Jun. Of course, it does have some current acct like properties, but the only downside to that is having to pay in £1000 a month. Their branches are not very widespread geographically, but after initial teething troubles (caused by credit ratings agencies... grrr!) I've had few problems using their online services. The other downside is their rate is boosted by a very large first year bonus. If you don't want the hassle of getting a new acct in a year's time, look elsewhere.
