Default dates

Options
I am currently on a DMP and coming to the end shortly and am interested in cleaning up my credit file to enable me to get a mortgage in the future.

Have just been looking at my credit file on Experian-some of the dates for the defaults seem later than they should be, some of them a year out.

Is there anything I can do about it?

I wouldn't be concerned about the dates of the defaults. As the DMP is your barrier to obtaining a mortgage. The sooner it's cleared, the sooner your credit profile can start to rebuild. Going to take time, will be years not months.

I found the below link really useful. I sent a copy to Barclay Card including highlighted areas around the time period a default date has to be recorded and they moved my default date back 2 years.

    Obviously each case is unique.

    Hope it helps.

Key in this case settlement date of the DMP.

People seem to have an obsession with default dates. When there's sometimes more critical factors that need addressing.

Read the link given by willLeeds. It is involved, and somewhat subjective an many cases, but depending on the payment history etc see whether you think under the definitions the that the current default date is accurate?

If you think it is not, then put in a formal complaint asking for it to be corrected. If no joy, then go to the FOS and ICO after the appropriate time.

While there are no guarantees, a complaint can result in a correction of the default date, which in turn effects the date (6 yrears after) that the default and account are removed entirely from your credit report.

The presence of a default is a major roadblock to getting decent credit even if settled. If a default has been applied late it's imperative to try and get it removed if you want any chance of decent credit.

What impact do you think a DMP has on an individuals credit file then?

yes the default dates are the critical thing as how long everything stays on your report depends on those. if they are wrong and should have been sooner then that needs sorting as a priority

None as nothing is added to someone's credit files to indicate they're on a DMP.

The accounts will be defaulted whether on a DMP or not.

If you mean when creditors add "AP" (arrangement to pay) markers to people's credit reports; this is supposed to be a short term agreement. If they add AP markers for any more than three or so months they should really be adding a default instead.
