San Francisco in September.

Hi all.

Just booked my flights for September and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for hotels for under £1000/7 nights(not planning to spend much time there) restaurants, bars and things to do?

We've got the obvious penciled in (Golden Gate, Alcatraz, FD) but has anyone got any good suggetions? I'm meeting my sister out there, she has been travelling for a year and this is the last leg of her tour so I thought I would join her. We're both young a fit(ish) so don't mind walking/tackling hills. The weather is set to be rather hot so a hotel with a pool would be nice if anyone has a recommendation?

Most appreciated :D

Hi, I'm not sure of the price these days, but for location the Argonaut hotel on fishermans wharf is great. It's right next to the tram stop into the city centre, and overlooks the bay. We loved it.

For Alcatraz try to get on the night time trip, it's on a few nights a week, and very early to be on the island as it gets dark!

Been to SFO 12 times, I never use hotels any more, I always just find a nice apartment on vrbo.com. Much better value

We stayed at the Mayflower Hotel last September and would recommend it if you want something clean but not fancy. It's on Bush Street near Union Square and Chinatown. From memory it was about £70 per night.

The Alcatraz night tour was good too, but book tickets as soon as you can. All tours were sold out for the next 4 or 5 days when we went.

The other thing you'll need to bear in mind is that SF is hosting the America's Cup between july and 21st Sept this year so it may be busier than normal. You need to get your accommodation booked asap if you don't want to be paying silly money for a hotel room.

It is a fantastic city and I'd return tomorrow. Have a great holiday!

That's great guys, thank you. I've never been to the US before and fancied doing something typically American, some sort of game would be amazing.

    Ooh getting all excited :D

Now you say you don't mind walking hills.......... but the cable cars are a great way to get around and classic San Fran. You can buy a day pass that lets you hop on and off all day. There are 3 lines that criss-cross most of the main areas, including a stop at the top of Lombard Street (the steep winding road that's been in a lot of tv shows/movies and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas)

(We are fit and do a lot of walking but San Fran 'hills' are something else! :D)

Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

Ha you've been 12 times!! Surely you must be bored by now?! What keeps you going back?

Cable cars are a must, just for the novelty and photo opportunities :)

San Francisco has a very European feel to it. There even some Blackpool tramcars.

I'm just back from San Francisco in May. We stayed in the Harbor Court hotel. It's owned by the same company as the Argonaut hotel mentioned above, however at least half the price. It's located next to the ferry terminal, next to street car and a 1 block walk from the BART station saving on having to pay a taxi from the airport.

Hire bikes and cycle over the bridge to Sausalito. Definitely book the Alcatraz tour in advance. It can be really windy & foggy there so make sure you take layers.

We went in June & although it was supposed to be warm, although we had some sunshine, we also had torrential rain, wind & fog!
