Deceased Interest

My wife has recently passed away and she had a H/Fax regular saver account. I just got a statement in and it appears that she has recieved interest net of tax even though she was a non tax payer. I remember reading somewhere that upon death an account changes status to net interest. However I was wondering since she was alive for 11 months of the interest period should that have been paid gross for those months? If this is so I am dreading arguing with the h/fax as I have had a nightmare time trying to close the account.

sorry to hear of your loss Nilocmac. Unfortunately what governs whether tax is deducted or not is when it is paid and not when it was earned. As the interest is paid after death it reverts to net.

Being met with various answers oh we have been really busy, the branch did not add this account to the list, we will send you out another delaration of daeth from

nilocmac, I am sorry for your loss. It makes it so much worse when one encounters unhelpfulness while trying to wind up the estate. It may be of use to you to know that the Halifax have a dedicated " Bereaved Service Centre " - here's a link. The telephone number is 08456 03 32 16. They are much more helpful than the Halifax counter staff and should be able to assist you in closing the account.

After my experience with them today I do not agree. I got so frustrated I asked for the chief Ex address was passed to a manager who told me they had no trace of my wife's death cert. She got the lady that I dealt within the branch to call me. To cut along story short after telling me they had no death cert they sent me a cheque out for one account and I called into the branch for the other. Talked to the branch manager who said that she would get to bottom of what happened and get the bereavement team to send a letter explaining what went wrong (that will be interesting). So also agreed to give me a few £'s as a good will gesture. It only took about 6 weeks to close the accounts.
