I have fairly fine hair and I condition it and comb it through with a wide toothed comb gently working from the bottom up till all the lugs are out. Rinse the conditioner out and wrap it in a towel. I squeeze the towel to get the excess water out and then use a tiny amount leave in conditioner and comb it from the bottom with a wide tooth comb, I get a lot less tangles by doing it this way. The gentler I am the easier it is to get any tangles out.
