Do I need a gas certificate to claim home insurance?

Hi

There is a leak from the flat upstairs down to our bathroom and we are trying to make a claim on this. But the insurance company wants us to provide a gas safety certificate, is that compulsory? We don't have one as I thought only landlord needed them.
They are also being very difficult as they want us to get a quote of how much the repair will be but also want us to identify the source of the leak which would mean ripping up the whole ceiling, then it's not just getting a quote. Can someone give me some in what to do?

Thanks

Not relevant if you are not renting. If you live in rented accommodation, it is compulsory for your landlord to obtain a certificate every 12 months.

With a leak from upstairs, you claim off your own Insurance and if there is any legal liability caused by the occupiers upstairs, your Insurers will try to reclaim their outlay from them, with you trying to reclaim any unisured losses e.g policy excess.

Insurers want to know the source of the leak, as it is pointless authorising a repair, only for the damage to occur again. Also it will help the Insurers understand the situation. If your neighbour upstairs is using faulty equipment which they know leaks, then they could be held legally liable for any damage they cause.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

    im confused here.

What relevance does having a gas certificate make to a water leak from a neighbour in an above flat!??

Also its the upstairs neighbour who needs the leak fixed before and remedial work is carried out for the OP
