Backdated tax credits (again)

Hi,

I also have a query surrounding the backdating of awards.

Basically in 2004 I had a letter saying I was overpaid by something like £2000, now I think I was overpaid, but only by around £1000-1500 of that.

At that point I moved house and didn't renew my claim, I have never heard from them since.

Now obviously I have buried my head in the sand with regards to this but I realyl need to sort it out, especially with the current situation in my relationship.

So how should I go about it, should I just put an application in and see what comes back? If they come back stating I owe 2000 for example, will any previous claim I would be entitled too but have not received (i.e. the last two years) then be deducted from what I would owe?

I'm really desperate to sort this out, it's always on my mind and has caused us problems obtaining other things which you need to be in receipt of benefits to get :(

Any help really gratefully received!

Phil

I would have thought that if you didnt claim for the last 2 years then you lose it, no harm in putting in a claim now and negotiating a repayment plan with them so you still get something each week/month :)
  • Thanks Scarlett :) - but does any know for definate?

As it would be a bit ridiculous for me to lose out on money and owe them at the same time?

Out of interest, how are they with payment plans, would I just be able to let them take my entire award (not a lot, £500 p/a) and refuse to pay anything on top? As I am already in debt etc.

I feel really stupid now to be honest, if I had sorted this back then when it first happened I guess it would of nearly or entirely been paid off by now if they had just withheld my current claim.

I can't believe I have messed up so badly.. I guess I don't have a choice though apart from applying a new claim and seeing what happens..
