Hi Guys,

I'm interested in buying a used car '09 plate from a main dealer. I believe he's had it px for a newer motor. Anyway I was going to do a HPI check before I purchased but I've been told that I have to pay a £59 admin charge which includes a car check.

Should that be enough to cover me, or should I do a HPI?

Thanks

Save yourself the £59.00 and just ask the main dealer to show you their copy of the HPI, and take note of how recently they carried out the HPI. Carefully check it, and question anything you aren’t happy about. If it appears that there is any outstanding financial interest ask for proof it has been settled.

If you are going to get your trousers taken down by going to a main dealer ("honest gov., the local vicar just traded this in because he got promoted for being so good") why are you going to pay even more money for something that they are obliged to do by law? Forget admin. charges too. Why not invoice them for sitting in their sweat box?

They're obliged by law to run an HPI check?

Every second hand car dealer will have their checklist, kindly supplied by the OFT, detailing their responsibilities under CPRs and SOGA. And yes, believe it or not, the first thing on the checklist is checking its history. Who would have thought it. You even as a professional trader have to demonstrate you have good title to goods and you can legally pass that title on. I blame the EU.

I traded in my car 2 weeks ago to a main dealer, the first thing the salesman did after we verbally agreed the deal was apologise to me as he "had to do a HPI check on my car before they could agree to finalise the deal on paper"
  • Even if there is finance outstanding on a vehicle and you buy it from a dealer then its not your concern, its theirs. There is absolutely nothing that can be done about it, the dealer is liable not the buyer.

This is the case in Scotland, I am assuming its the same in the rest of the UK.
