Can't eat or drink

I haven't been able to keep down food and drink for nearly a week. Every time I eat or drink I'm sick, sometimes it's within minutes other times it can be as long as an hour or so.

I went to A&E on Tuesday but they said there was nothing physically wrong and prescribed me anti-sickness medication to take three times a day for a week. They didn't take any bloods or give me fluids.

I don't know if this is related but I've noticed about 3 bruises on my legs. They aren't from hitting/bumping into anything.

Not being able to eat and drink is really distressing me. If there's nothing physically wrong then it must be mentally but what mental illness causes you to vomit after food and drink. I'm really worried that it could be something serious.

I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance/support.

I think your GP might be a better person to call on than A&E as this seems not to be an accident, and hopefully not an emergency. It is a pity it is the weekend - does your GP have weekend cover?

I agree I didn't think A&E was necessary but the ward Doctor (I'm in a psychiatric hospital) insisted I go. It was either I agreed to go willingly or I'd be taken by secure transport.

We have a duty Doctor who covers the evenings/weekends but he was called last weekend about this problem and he just said to drink water. I did this and it still makes me sick.

I'm a bit suprized at your experience of A&E, although I believe your GP would have been a more suitable first port of call but in A&E they take your bloods as a matter of principal even if your there for an issue which is already diagnosed, its just the way they work.

It would go back to your GP who will be able to run tests, if your ill for longer then 2 weeks they start to view it as serious. You should be able to see an on-call doctor at the weekend or out of hours but otherwise Monday? If your losing a lot of fluids/water then you should go back to A&E because that is serious and they'd take bloods to see how dehydrated you were. I was ill and unable to keep anything down for a day, I ended up on a drip when I was taken to A&E due to dehydration and low blood sugar so it is important to go get help if your unable to keep any fluids down.

Thanks for your reply. As I'm in hospital (psychiatric) I don't actually have a GP. There is a ward Doctor but she was the one that sent me to A&E.

I had my bloods done here yesterday but as yet haven't had the results.

The duty Doctor said he would come and see me today but as yet he hasn't seen me although I have heard he's been to the ward.

I still haven't been able to eat and drink so I guess I'll just have to speak to the ward Doctor on Monday.

I suggest that you draw the ward doctor's attention to the bruising, particularly as you don't have a reason for it. I get this because of low blood platelets (blood not clotting enough). It is linked to quite a few conditions (in my case medication which i take) and should be checked. I am not a doctor so can only tell you what I know about it.

    Thanks for replying.

I will definitely mention it to the ward Doctor on Monday.

How much can you actually keep down? Does the hospital do those build-up drinks, you could maybe try one mouthful. Then two, then build up to see how much you can take. Or can you physically not manage to swallow anything, due to nerves or something similar?

I can swallow all food and drink it's just that it doesn't stay down and I usually vomit within a few minutes but it can also happen an hour + afterwards. The last meal I kept down was on 31/05/13. I have attempted to eat and drink on Wed. Thurs. and Fri. but nothing has stayed down. I drank some water last night and today and I vomited.

You might need re-hydration if you can't even take water without vomiting. Are you feeling dizzy at all?

Not dizzy, no. I'm very tired. I slept for 5 hours straight this afternoon.
