Motor insurance - changing car

Hope this is the right place to post,

I took an annual insurance policy with Endsleigh Insurance in Oct 2012, paid in full £170 for a 2005 ford focus 1.6tdci 100k miles.
I part ex'ed this vehicle in February, getting OH a newer car and in return I took "custody" of her 2005 Hyundai Getz until I could find a car I wanted, which cost a £28 admin fee with Endsleigh to amend the original insurance policy.
I have just found and bought an 8 month old 1.2tsi Octavia £9400, and will be giving Getz to our eldest as his 1st motor.
Contacted Endsleigh to be told cannot insure the Octavia as the underwriter has a £4000 price limit on cover! I can either cancel existing policy or take out a new policy .. .... "You are owed £60 in premiums but to cancel there will be a £55+ admin fee which will leave you with a refund of £2 which we will send by cheque" or "you can take out a new policy for £209 and after applying the refund a payment of £149 will be required"

Before buying the car I checked what it would cost me in insurance and received 10+ quotes on screen scraper sites giving me quotes between £155-£165 for this vehicle before I use any cashback sites.

So I have now cancelled the policy as I would not stay with them if I had to, but they have cut off my access to the online admin site and I cannot now check full terms and conditions.
There is nothing on my insurance certificate about a £4000 value limit, is this normal?
Is there anything I can do/should do about this appearing to be unfair, in that I did not want to cancel my policy and would have been happy to pay a "small" admin fee, £30ish as paid in february to change vehicle on the policy, but as that is not an option and I feel I should not be "forced" to cancel and pay them for the privilege

I have emailed endsleigh complaints dept but they are yet to respond.

Any advice, even if its "Read the terms properly you plonker" :(, gratefully received

    They have acted correctly.

You took out the policy to cover the car and now want to change the goalposts.

No insurer will guarantee that cover will continue if you want to make any material changes during the life of the policy.

Next time you want to make changes check with the insurer to see if they are acceptable before buying any replacement.

I changed address recently and even with the cancellation fees it was cheaper for me to go elsewhere.

With any change, address, car etc it is always worth checking how much it would be to go elsewhere even with the cancellation fee.

I know that some insurers have a low value limit on cars that they will insure TPF&T but didn't know any would have such a low limit for comp cover.

There wouldn't be anything on your certificate about it.

Who was the insurer out of interest?

I found this when getting quotes on my car. Put £1999 as the value and you get different quotes to putting £2001.

Obviously some isurers dont like cars below £2000 where others maybe the opposite.
