My Mrs got a part time job in a chippy. 8 hours per week. It works out she is getting £5 per hour. The boss said the rest goes in tax. I told her she doesn't earn v enough to v pay tax. Am I correct? How do we handle this?

Does she get a pay slip?0

she should get a payslip that will detail deductions etc0

Yes you need your payslip to work out what is going on.
If it's her first month working there she might be on an emergency tax code which should get sorted by next payday, but you won't know until you've seen the slip.0 -

However there is no tax payable so the boss is lying!!We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
If she is working 8 hours very unlikely she has tax to pay but if this is her first job and she does not have a P45 for code guidance then she may be on a BR tax code which would make sense of her £5.00 as grossed up would equate to £6.25 per hour. She needs to get the correct forms to let HMRC know she is working and would like a tax code.0

OP hasn't made it very clear what his wife's position is - is this her only source of (taxable) income or does she have other earnings but there is probably no need to involve HMRC in this - simply complete a P46 with the employer and, assuming this is the main or only job, the employer will then have to use the emergency tax code which means £180 can be earned each week before any tax is deducted.
Might take a bit longer to get tax already paid back but at least future wages can be paid in full.0 -
She doesn't even get a payslip. This is her only job. The boss is trying to be smart I think.0

The law says that employers must provide payslips when or before an employee is paid.
Was she paid in cash or cheque (presumably not BACS)?
Is she their only employee?
Has she been there less than two months?0 -
