Internal door handle/lock

The spring has gone on one of the internal doors in my house. OH took it to pieces and said we need a new compression spring. Went to local ironmongers and he didn't have and the replacement bit is modern and will mean OH has to fill the door and cut out a smaller bit for the lock to slot in.
Does anyone know where I can get either a compression spring or a replacement lock.
It is not key operated just the normal handles either side. It's the original fittings from when the house was built in the 1950's so I guess they will all start giving up the ghost soon.

You could try ebay. Or post a wanted on freecycle? Or ask neighbours (if they're replacing doors/handles etc)0

OH put it back in the door! It's just a bog standard latch operated by door levers but instead of a narrow barrel it's a square thing inside the door!!
When it's out next, hopefully tomorrow, I will take a picture! ~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)
