Hello.
Sister is on DLA due to long term back problems.
She tells me that she can have up to £16000 in savings ( she has nothing like this amount ) before this begins to affect her benefits.
Question is :- When dealing with benefit people, is she obliged to declare any savings OR is it the case that she need not declare unless or until, the savings go over the £16000 upper limit?
Thank you Pete.

DLA is not means tested. Are you sure that is the only benefit she receives?0

I think for means tested benefits...income support, housing benefit etc, the actual amount you have to declare is anything over £6000. Once you have £16000 you are not entitled to means tested benefits...( I think)
However, as someone has said dla is not means tested therefor savings have not impactIts all mind over matter. I don't mind and you don't matter:rotfl:0 -
http://www.sefton.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=6093 might be worth a look.
Sliding scale between £6000 and £16000 - she'd need to declare her savings if receiving means tested benefits.0 -
i have recently moved home and needed to complete a new housing benefit claim form. it specifically asked the amount of ANY savings, not just savings over 6k.
if savings are under 5l then benefit isnt affected, so why not just declare them?0 -
Many thanks to all for the replies.
I still do not fully understand this and I am not sure that my sister does either.
I will have to see what other benefits she is, or is not, claiming before taking this further.
Thank you all again.
