Super scrimper weed removing tip does it work??

Hi

I got this tip from watching the super scrimper show, i was just wondering if anyone else had tried it and did it work?

The tip is to get rid of weeds between paving slabs you should pull them out and then put salt around the slab and finally hot kettle boiled water.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks:beer:

It'll work, but if you boil the kettle for that alone, it'll likely cost as much as cheap weedkiller would. If you want to use up the remaining dribble when you are making a cuppa, that would be moneysaving!

And how long might that take if you have lots of weeds on a big drive.
Is that why your called DAFT DUCK.?

Even ignoring the fact that boiling water, and salt, are not free; I wouldn't say it was worth pulling up your patio slabs for that. Sure the boiling water will kill weeds, and they won't like the salt. But once the salt has been washed away by the rain new weeds will grow again.
I have a funky tool for scraping weeds out from between patio slabs that was 99p from Tescos and works a charm. I alternate between that and weedkiller and just not giving a toss.

Salt yes. I use in on the front gravel area, Cheapest salt in the supermarket.

Put a little pile on a weed and watch it shrivel. Boiling water nope, As mentioned above the cost of electric will probably outweigh buying a decent weedkiller.

I get mine from the allotment shop. Its like a syrup and not the watery stuff from the shops.

I do have a small amount of the £ shop weedkiller i bought some years back. Seems its been banned now but works well.
Nothing grows for the year you use it. This newer shop stuff you can plant in 6 weeks or less.

If you have a big drive, you'd be an idiot for using this technique at all. A good residual weedkiller would be the way to go. Or a flame gun, which is probably slightly cheaper than salt and a kettle.

Point is, this isn't that effective, isn't that efficient, however you do it.

So you're saying it costs more than £3.49 to boil the kettle?
Asda had a weedkiller for £3.45 or so.
  • You would have to boil a lot of kettles to get the same coverage as one pack of weedkiller.

How big is your kettle 2Litres? Enough for 6 smaller weeds? Or a couple of large ones.

If the weeds are deeply rooted it wont be long before they recover also.

The weedkiller gets into the roots and kills it. A small bottle goes a long way.

    Come on, use your noggin.

Of course not. A kettle holds a litre or three of water. Boiling costs little, but it does cost, as does the salt. It also makes a pretty poor weed killer. It needs to be a high concentration to work, and will be rapidly dispersed with rain.

So, did you look at the Asda weedkiller to see what the coverage was? Or look wider for weedkillers? You can probably treat 10 square yards for 20p, and that could either be with glyphosate-based weedkiller that has no residual effect, or a long-lasting one for use on paths... that might give six months weed-free. Far cheaper and far, far more effective than salt and a kettle.

The salt + boiling water trick is great for a few cracks with light weeds that need treating now and then. Especially if you happen to have boiled a bit much.

I go to my local farmer co-op shop, where the REAL farmers go!

And I get the generic version of round up which is called Gallup here for half the price of round up. And big, big containers of it too.
