Ear ache... (not medical advice)

I know that olive oil is good for helping ear ache but I don't have any in.

Would vegetable oil be effective?

Many thanks

(obviously if it continues or gets worse I will visit the GP but I have had success before with olive oil)

Probably worth a try until you can get to the GP.

I thought olive oil was for a build up of wax, rather than earache, and on that basis I'd expect veg oil to work just as well.

Actual ear ache is more likely to be an infection, which will either resolve itself in a day or two, or you will need to visit the GP for some anti-Bs.

Paracetamol will probably be more effective than oil to relieve the pain.

Exactly what this post says, any oil will not cure earache.

I get regular ear ache in my right ear, especially when sleeping on that side, but no infection. Haven't had it in my left before!

:) I went thru a spell of recurring ear aches a few months ago, felt like the ear canal was swollen, very painful but no unwellness or dizziness.

Nurse at walk-in clinic looked and said outer ear infection and to use ibruprofen to take down swelling and to see GP if persists.

Ear infections can be inner, outer or middle ear and really do need to be checked out by a professional, but the ibu might assist until you can get to one. HTH.

the oil just loosens and softens hard wax that build up in your ear so any oil will do.

My dd suffers with ear ache an awful lot. In order to get us through the nights - why do they always start in the night? - we give her ibuprofen and then I warm a tea towel and put that on that side of her head (warm, not hot). It doesn't take the pain away but seems to make it more bearable so that we can all get a little sleep.

Hope you get sorted soon. Nothing worse than ear ache.

Maybe not any oil, unless you also want to stop your brain from going rusty. ;)

Actually it is used for other kinds of earache. When my DD was 3 she had dreadful earache which my Dr would do nothing about even though she was constantly crying and holding it. I gave her Calpol, put a teaspoon of warm olive oil in her ear and bunged it with cotton wool. The next day bloody water/pus kept running out of her ear everytime she tilted her head, and the pain was gone.
