Death in family - holiday covered??

I will have more info hopefully tomorrow.

Going on holiday for 2 weeks this Friday, 1 June, to Antigua with Virgin.

OH's grandad has passed away this evening. OH is extremely close to him and has to arrange the funeral - which will be 50 miles away.

Its looking like the funeral will be after we go away and he does not want to miss it but we can't afford to lose the money on the holiday. :(

Do you think we could change the dates or our insurance would cover anything? I am going to ring Virgin tomorrow.

Email for insurance confirmation says this.

"Cover: Primary Essentials Inc Baggage
Destination: Antigua
Departure Date: 01/06/2007 Duration: 15 Days
Medical Expenses Cover: ?5000000
Personal Liability: ?2000000
Cancellation Cover: ?1000
Baggage Cover: ?750
Personal Accident Cover: ?10000"

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cover for cancellation usually applies if it is an 'immediate relative' who has died and on my policy grandfather is in the immediate relative definition so you are probably OK there. They tend to be fairly standard.

The cancellation cover of £1000 looks on the low side, particularly if it's total and not per person, for a holiday to Antigua. I fear you mght not get back your full cost here.
  • I would speak to your insurance company first thing in the morning to check exactly what's what and whether you are covered for the full cost of your holiday (if you cancel) or if they would pay you X amount back to you if you were to cancel, and then I would phone Virgin and explain the situation and I am sure they would be as accommodating to you as they possibly could be, especially give the circumstances (although I know not ALL tour operators are like this), and maybe you could travel on your holiday just a few days later than your original date (if flights are available). This would probably be the best option for you, and most cost effective if your insurance company doesn't cover you for the full cost of you holiday. Hope everything all works out well for you X

    Hey Lou! :hello:

dzug has a point there, £1000 cover isn't much - check that's the right figure... Also check whether it's £1000 per person/policyholder or something.

By the way, this is virgin's cancellations policy - contact them asap and you won't lose the entire cost and thus it may be under the £1000 limit hence under the umbrella of insurance cover...

From the table below, 15-28 days notice means loss of 60% of the total cost, so hopefully this amount is below £1000.
