HMRC Duty Free....

Outside EU, I have always brought back 500g. (250g my allowance, 250g partners).

Never bothered with alcohol, because I have never quite understood, is it either/or ?

Can I bring my 250g tobacco and also 1 litre of spirit 22%+ ?

The HMRC website says "You cannot combine alcohol and tobacco allowances." But give no further detail.

If worst comes to worst I'll just have to down 1 litre of JD on the plane

You can each have the max of each item. 250g and 1 litre of spirits.

I think the "combined" means that if you are in a party of four people you cannot take their allowance from them so you can personally take 4 litres in. Each member of the party needs to take 1litre each. If they all hand you the bottles when back in the UK that's perfectly ok.

Ahhh, well I usually buy tobacco in a 500g pack, so should I take out 5x50g and put them in my partners suitcase ?

Just in case I get pulled up...

I've seen other people do exactly that. I'm no expert in duty free.

I don't smoke so don't bother but if me and the missus do take hold luggage, it's only ever one between us.
So all our stuff would be together anyway, I don't think you need to split it.

theres no need to split owt up into each other bags as theres such a thing as a collective purse which, in this instance, means as long as you are both there you're gonna be fine.
