New Bespoke Hardwood Front door with Stained Glass

Hi All,
Looking at a brand new replacement for our Edwardian front door, some philistine has ripped out the old stained glass and joinery an dreplaced it with a single wire reinforced panel, door has seen better days as well so looking a complete replacement.
We want to replicate others on the street and next doors which have a diamond type design, all infilled with stained glass, almost identical to the attached.
We've been quoted just under £2000 to do this work from scratch in hardwood including new locks and door furniture, and fitting, seem reaosnable?

if you like the design and are happy with the work involved then go for it...
There are cheaper options when it comes to front doors but in honesty whats the point spending £1000 on a composite one when your heart lies with the stained glass one...its a waste of £1000
Because its being made for you I suspect there is little difference between what you are being charged and other companies so its probable that if you were to obtain further quotes they are probably not going to vary much...its certainly something we found when we had our internal doors made to measure....we got several quotes all in the same region and went with the one that seemed to offer us the best tailored package.
Having said that it probably would help you guage the price more if you were to get a second or even third quote if you can so you can compare price/quality etc.
It certainly is a lot to spend on a front door but as I said if you like it and can afford it then why not...will it add value to the house...maybe because its in period keeping but not always because its not original...however I wouldnt be put off by it!frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!
2017 toiletries challenge 179 out 145 in ...£18.64 spend0 -
I concur with LEJC - get a couple of additional quotes. Then compare.
And what an opportunity! You can choose beautiful stained glass...
*is a little envious*
I would recommend getting all the security features properly fitted at the same time - like one of those alarm bell strips that make a noise when the door is opened.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016
Thank you Honey Bear0 -
I would say thats a very reasonable quote. If you were to fit traditional leaded lights ( not stained glass) in the door your posted those alone would be around £ 80-100 each.
When you say replacing in "Hardwood" ,which hardwood are they going to make it from?. I would go for either Sapele or Utile as they are decent hardwoods but don't go for hardwoods such as Meranti as this is not very durable and won't last as long.
Does the quote include a new frame or just replacing the door?.If the frame is in poor condition now is the time to replace it and you can then have the frame fully draught stripped.0 -
Thanks all for your input, I have actually received another quote this weekend that was higher around the £2300 mark but they were a bit unsure how well they could match the stained glass.
The £2k quote is for the door to be made in Sapele without a new frame (it's in pretty good condition so doesn't need replacing). The stained glass specialist is confident we'll have an exact match to others on the road, having seen some of his work we're pretty confident in him as well.
With regards to adding value, it can only be an improvement on the door we have currently! Whether it will add £2k+ to the value of the property I don't know but we're planning to stay for a while so we'll get to enjoy it ourselves.0 -
Just wanted to add - that's a really lovely design of door! I'm sure you'll be delighted with the custom stained glass. We're toying with replacing a tiny window on our landing (Edwardian house) with stained glass - neighbours have replaced theirs with uPVC so we don't match anyway. I know what you mean, for us it won't add any value to the house but this is our home and we will get great pleasure out of our little piece of art!0

The one thing you can guarantee is that it won't add £2k to your house value. If you want it and can afford it then buy it for yourselves.
It won't add value though it may make it more saleable.0
