Sound Card

If it were me I think I would try booting with a live Linux disk like Knoppix. It might reveal that your audio is still capable of working if you get a positive result.0

Quite likely to be on board sound.
I seem to remember having an external USB sound device once which is another option if sound can't be restored.0 -
What model cordless headphones do you have?0

They are Tevion, which where bought from Aldi some years ago, and work perfectly normally. I've never had any problems with them.
Lum, I've run a latency test, and it stayed mostly green, with the odd yellow appearing now and then, but no red. Looks like I'll be ok with an Asus card. I looked in the shops at the weekend. PC world didn't have any PCIe sound cards, and Maplins cheapest in store, was £60. I want to get one as soon as I can. I'm going on holiday soon, and want to sort some mp3s out to take with me. Can't do that without sound. Using the usb with speakers means that everyone else has to put up with them too.0 -
Are they like these
http://download2.medion.com/downloads/anleitungen/bda_md82441_uk.pdf
It says "If the signal indicator remains off, switch on the audio source and increase it's output level until the red indicator light comes on".
If they are the same, is there no level at which the light comes on with your son's USB sound card?0 -

Ok, went for the Asus Xonar card, and speakers working brilliantly, but front panel not. I've checked, and re-checked that the card is inserted properly, and the cable is attached for front panel. This is the first time I've used the front panel since installing it a couple of weeks ago.0

Assuming it's not an extra drive panel, but the ones integrated in the front of the case you need to make sure they're correctly plugged in on the motherboard. What is the motherboard you have? (You need to get the manual to see)
also make sure in sound settings they're not turned off.0 -
Oh, I assumed the jumper cable (or whatever it's called) for the front panel, should be connected to the front panel plug socket on the Xonar card, or am I wrong?0

I think you're right. 9 pin connector on the card
Might just be a setting in the interface.
6.2.2 in DGX manual for Analog out mode says
The Analog Out setting is used to match your actual
speaker setting, such as headphones, 2 speakers (or 2.1),
4 speakers (or 4.1), 5.1 speakers, Front Panel Headphone and Front Panel 2 speakers (or 2.1). Xonar DGX will play the channels and do the proper 3D surround sound processing accordingly. Select the correct speaker type for your connected speakers.
So is there a setting there for Front Panel Headphones and Front Panel 2 speakers?0
