Graduation Day Costs

My youngest is hopefully about to graduate from university in a few weeks time. Despite the results not yet being published we have had to pay upfront £60 for the graduation fee, and £40 for gown hire.

Is it the norm in the rest of the country to pay this much without the knowledge that your beloved offspring have actually passed their degree?

best regards

I think that all universities cost around this much to graduate!

Sounds pretty similar to when I graduated 3 years ago.

As far as I'm aware, even if you don't pass you still get some sort of certificate.

If you are paying for the graduation costs and he has not passed then I would simply ask him to pay you the money back.

I graduated last year in November and it cost £36 for entry for myself and two guests into the ceremony, plus £50 for the gown hire, another £30+ for the CHEAPEST photo package (which took three months to arrive ), plus the cost of travelling back down to my university as I'd left back in May, plus food and parking! It was an expensive day just to receive a bit of paper and shake the hand of the university dean.

When I graduated, I had to pay similar amounts for the day. The thing that cheesed me off was the special photo pack which was so unbelievably overpriced I refused to pay it. Instead my family took photos which are just as nice. Surely you would take your own photos even if you were having an official one, and are official ones even that important?!

We had to pay £40 as a "Graduate Council Fee" whether we attended the ceremony or not. Then £11 for each guest (up to 4), £41 for gown hire, £22 for cheapest photography.
And there was me thinking we were still poor students!
  • Wow this graduation fee is ridiculous, i graduated in 2010 and my only cost for the actual graduation was the gown which cost £45 and i got 2 free tickets and could have had more if i needed them also free.

I skipped the photos and just got some friends to take them, you should have seen the look on the official photographers face when about 40 people all refused to have the official ones taken.

Overall though i did spend about £300 in hotels, transport for myself and family.(I paid as birthday presents)
