A week in the Sun for 4 "Oldies"

4 of us are thinking of going to Benidorm for a week to have a break. We want to fly from
Southampton
Bournemouth
Gatwick.
We would like a 4 or 5 star hotel on HB or FB basis. Looking to go away from the 26th Sept '07 to 6th Oct for 7 nights.
What I'm really looking for is a good hotel. I can look at flights via web but need tips on hotel, please.
Or should we book a package via Thomson etc ?

How many rooms do you want?"Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."0

I trust Sloppy Chops with my passport so what they advise I would gladly jump on it!!!!!! However, are you sure about Benidorm? Too me Benidorm is a lot like Blackpool and is nice for a day out, the back streets are full of hotels etc etc and bars....with a lot of strippers that move from one bar to another with half hour intervals....the hotels are normally high rise (first time I saw Benidorm I just asked if that was "concrete city") and to find a spanish person there is nigh on impossible.
HOWEVER! If you have never been abroad before then I always recommend Benidorm as you can get Egg N Chips or even Fish n Chips with mushy peas.0 -

Joanne, to be honest, Benidorm is NOT my choice. The couple we are going with want lots of entertainment in the evenings. So, I had to accept defeat in the destination.
It is some 30 years since I was there last and I'm sure it has not changed much! I did fancy going back to Rhodes (Ixia) but was told, "It's too quiet there". I also thought about Cyprus.0 -

I have to agree Benidorm would not be my choice either. My hubby absolutely hates the place but my sister goes there year after year."Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."0

if benidorm it is then the plaza is a good hotel in the right 'levante' side for entertainment.
whilst benidorm may not scream culture itself there are plenty of nice places to go and experience close by.0 -
Not in my top 10 either, but wouldn't write it off for quick week in the sun (was there a couple of years ago - given them enough time to forget the last time I went in the early 80s.!)... Very different to Greece - it is VERY high-rise and getting more so with the Russian mafia money coming in (most of it in the next bay to the south).
However, it is still very much open after midnight (just getting started really), decent public transport to/from the airport, good beach, VERY cheap bars (2nd/3rd line Brit ones) and Chinese restaurants, excellent train and bus services up the coast.
The southern beach (Poniente) is more Spanish than the north (Levante), but pretty simlar to most other resorts in the world - you get to see the locals when they're working or "promenading" in the evening. Just get yourself off and have a laugh (wherever you end up) - you can always give it a miss for the next 30 years...0
