Tesco Direct - Rant!

Argh!
Frustrated with Tesco Direct. Has anyone else had this issue, before?
Wanted to order a fairly bulky electrical item as a gift for someone that lives 200 miles away. I decided that rather than trying to schedule a delivery, I would order it on Tesco Direct so that it could be collected in-store.
All the way through the buying process, it asked me to name who would be collecting the item and to give their phone number, and said that they'd need to take some ID.
As soon as I clicked to confirm the order, I get a message telling me that the item can't be collected without the payment card!
What a stupid system! I asked for help from Customer Services last night, and they said to call the store and let them know. Apparently, calling the store and speaking to them directly would enable me to give permission for the item to be collected by someone else, without the payment card.
This morning, I've tried calling the specific Tesco store. They have their own number on the Tesco website - each store has a different phone number - but I STILL got through to a central customer service advisor who couldn't answer my question but told me they would be 'unlikely' to let anyone else collect the item.
So, I phoned up to cancel. My order is now 'past the point of no return'. Apparently it will get to the store tomorrow for 4pm, and will then sit there for 14 days before it's automatically sent back and I apparently get a refund.

MY mum had a tesco order come in and I went and collected it, she just sent me a copy of the email order so I could use my phone to show them. We are known I guess, so that might be why. But even on my own orders I don't think I've ever shown them my payment card.
Send the person a copy of your email confirmation, and get them to try it and see with that email.0 -
I've also collected something without the payment card before, with the confirmation email, which I printed off. Worth a try rather than just waiting for it to be returned.0

Thank you! I'll give it a go. No harm trying!0

The stores staff concentrate on serving people who are there , they don't have the staff to man the 'phones, hence yes you will go very a call centre, when often they can answer your query. Did they try the 'Direct Desk' in the Store?
You could try again, you may have better luck at a different time, - or try the Duty Manager.I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard0 -
I collected an order yesterday, all they took was the name on the order. No ID, payment card or order number required. Fingers crossed yours goes like this too!0

I think its store dependent tbh, on the occasions I've collected I have been asked to show my payment card.
I've ordered some bits of clothing this morning and the email is telling me:If you're collecting your parcel from a store, please bring your order number and a form of photo ID.
It is actually in bold as well, just as above.
I think they are tightening up security due to the clubcard points thefts.0 -
I work at Tesco Customer Service Desk and Payment Cards mean nothing to us when you come to collect a Direct parcel. There is no means of checking your payment card to the item apart from the name, which in a lot of cases is different because people come in to collect their partners items etc. so the best thing you can go by is either Photographic ID like drivers licence, passport, or Confirmation Email which has the order number on it.

Perfect, thanks. Seems I've been misinformed. I'll report back if the collection goes ok!0 -

Their name is listed as the name under the collection details, so photo ID itself shouldn't be an issue.
They'll have their ID. It's only the payment card I can't transport across the country.0
