    I've just received another email from the company I bought it from saying I cannot return it because I used/opened the product. It doesn't specify used in any way, but I of course opened it... I guess I won't be sending it back.

    The Distance Selling Regulations do not allow them to specify the product cannot be used or opened (except for sealed software possibly?). You should be allowed to power on the laptop and examine it.
